Project Overview
The Viridor RREC (Recycling and Renewable Energy Centre) in Glasgow is a vital facility processing 222,000 tonnes of residual waste annually. This state-of-the-art centre converts waste into renewable energy, supplying electricity to 26,496 households and heat to 8,000 homes. To support these demanding operations, Viridor required a highly durable, chemical-resistant flooring system that could withstand the extreme conditions of a waste management environment. TPS360 was contracted to install a Sika® UCRETE® IF resin flooring system in key areas of the facility. UCRETE® IF was selected due to its proven performance in similar environments at other Viridor sites, offering exceptional durability, rapid installation, and long-lasting protection against mechanical wear and chemical exposure.
Scope of Works
Surface Preparation Planetary grinding and scarifying were used to remove contaminants and smooth the surface, ensuring optimal adhesion of the resin flooring. Rebar Replacement In areas with deteriorated steel reinforcement, TPS360 replaced the rebar to restore the substrate’s structural integrity, preparing it for the demands of the facility. Levelling Damaged and uneven sections were repaired using SikaEmaco® T 1200 PG , creating a strong, level substrate for the resin installation. Installation of Ucrete IF The Sika® UCRETE® IF resin was applied at a 15mm thickness, providing a seamless, resilient surface capable of withstanding heavy traffic, chemical exposure, and thermal cycling
Challenges
One of the major challenges of the Viridor RREC project was maintaining the facility’s 24-hour operation without disruption. Given the critical nature of the waste management processes, it was essential that the installation of the flooring system did not cause any downtime. To address this, TPS360 phased the work, carefully coordinating with the client to ensure that all essential areas remained fully operational throughout the project. In addition to the phased installation, TPS360 faced the challenge of preparing and levelling a damaged substrate, which was handled using advanced surface preparation techniques and high-performance levelling compounds. These solutions, combined with meticulous planning and communication, allowed TPS360 to meet the client’s strict timelines without impacting the facility’s continuous operations.
