There were a number of contaminants on top of the substrate, including 6-8mm of water-based screed, tile adhesive and a number of bolts into the floor. All contamination was removed; bolts removed and holes filled and a number of repairs carried out to the substrate.
The substrate was then ground and polished to a 3000-grit finish – a penetrating concrete densifier was applied during the polishing process to prevent future dusting. Refining the substrate to this standard resulted in a hard-wearing, dust-free finish, while also being one of the most environmentally friendly floor finishes with very low life cycle costs.
