The Exmouth Community College expansion, a pivotal project in Devon’s educational development, involved constructing a two-story, 8-classroom extension. This project was led by Kier, known for their excellence in construction, with TPS360 appointed for their expertise in installing high-quality decorative screed. The aim was to enhance the educational space’s functionality while complementing the existing
architectural design with a visually appealing, durable finish.

CHALLENGES

The project initially faced a setback with the unavailability of the chosen flooring product, potentially impacting the timeline and design. However, TPS360, utilising our deep industry knowledge, collaborated with Kier to find a superior alternative. This new selection excelled in quality and performance, reflecting our adaptability and dedication to high standards. Our expertise in cementitious overlays also guided essential advice on joint placement to reduce cracking risks, ensuring a durable and high-quality finish.

SCOPE OF WORKS

Mapei Ultratop was selected for its durability and visual appeal.
The preparation process began with sanding the cement and sand substrate using STR machines, coupled with efficient dust extraction. This was followed by a thorough vacuuming to prepare a clean base for the next steps.

Repairs were carried out to the substrate to repair cracking caused during the curing process of the screed. Next, primer was applied evenly across the surface with a full quartz scatter to give a clean but textured surface for the topping to adhere to.

The Ultratop surface was finally poured at a nominal 10mm and then polished to create a refined and smooth finish. Finally, the floor was sealed for durability and aesthetic maintenance. This sealing process was crucial for ensuring the floor’s longevity and resistance to wear and tear.

TIMELINE &. QUALITY MANAGEMENT

The project was marked by a tight timeline of 10 days, evenly divided between preparation and polishing, demanding efficient project management and meticulous planning, alongside a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of quality, a challenge adeptly met through diligent work and coordination, ensuring both timeliness and excellence in execution.

“I’m immensely proud of our team’s performance on this project. Faced with unexpected challenges, we demonstrated our unique ability to transform obstacles into opportunities for success”
