The Crucial Role of Surface Preparation in Resin Flooring with Expert Insights from Mark Jackson

At TPS360, we firmly believe in the age-old adage, “Fail to Prepare, Prepare to Fail.” This philosophy is deeply ingrained in our approach to resin flooring, championed by Mark Jackson, an expert in the Surface Preparation and Concrete Polishing Industry since the 1990s.

The Evolution of Surface Preparation: A Journey Through Time

Mark Jackson has been at the forefront of the industry’s evolution since the 1990s. He’s seen first-hand how techniques have advanced, yet how the challenge of inadequate surface preparation remains prevalent worldwide. Despite advancements, he often encounters the perennial issue of poor preparation, reinforcing the saying that to neglect preparation is to set oneself up for failure.

From Shot Blasting to Planetary Grinding: A Paradigm Shift

Mark recalls when shot blasting was the industry standard. However, the introduction of planetary grinders in the mid-90s, validated by a Swedish university study, marked a significant shift. These grinders, available in 415v, 240v, and 110v, offer versatility for various scales of work. Particularly, the 415v grinders excel in intensive substrate preparation and coating removal, leaving a smooth, prepared surface. Despite their robustness, lower voltage grinders (240v and 110v) are less suitable for heavy-duty coating removal but can be effective in specific scenarios with appropriate tooling and technique.

The Current Landscape: Navigating Through Mixed Practices

In the present industry landscape, Mark observes a range of practices due to varied manufacturer recommendations. He stresses the importance of clear, precise guidelines to prevent substandard preparation methods.

Comparative Analysis of Techniques

  • Shot Blasting: A reliable method, available in multiple voltages, each suitable for different project requirements.
  • Planetary Grinders: Especially the robust 415v grinders, are excellent for removing coatings and preparing surfaces, offering a smoother finish.
  • Single-Headed Grinders: Predominantly used in the UK for localised tasks, they are not intended for extensive surface preparation.
  • STR/STG/ Schwamborn 701 110v: Often misclassified as a grinder, this 58kg machine is more akin to a sander. While it can be fitted with diamond segments, its 110v power and design limit it to less intensive tasks like cleaning sand and cement screed before coating or priming, rather than heavy-duty coating removal or concrete keying.

The Impact of Incorrect Preparation Techniques

Highlighting the risks of improper preparation, TPS360 underscores the potential for compromised quality and reduced durability. Our advice is to ensure alignment with manufacturers’ recommendations to achieve the best outcomes.

The Future: Advocating for Enhanced Training and Standards

TPS360 is pushing for more comprehensive training and clearer standards in the industry. The aim is to guarantee that customers receive the promised quality and not a lesser alternative.

Closing Thoughts: The Imperative of Proper Preparation

We, emphasise the critical importance of thorough preparation. It is a crucial step, not just for success but for the durability and adherence of resin flooring. Overlooking this vital phase is essentially preparing for failure.
