Flooring work’s not boring work! Just ask one of our apprentices!

4 March, 2024

At TPS360 we have been celebrating National Apprenticeship Week 2024! It’s been a reminder of our commitment to nurturing talent within the specialist trade of resin flooring installation.

There has been a growing market for resin flooring in both commercial and industrial sectors in recent years, and as a consequence, an increasing variety of businesses are experiencing its benefits. This is good news for them, good news for us and also good news for the young people looking to enter an industry that can provide them with training, development opportunities and employment for many years to come.

At TPS360, we recognise the opportunities that exist for young people in the locations where we operate, which is why, every year, we welcome a fresh wave of talent with our new apprenticeship programme. We currently have apprenticeship opportunities available at both our South Wales and Tamworth facilities, which serve customers nationwide. It is a privilege to be able to welcome in young minds who bring new perspectives and energy, invigorating our team and reaffirming our commitment to nurturing the next generation of industry professionals.

We have always been dedicated to advancing knowledge and experience in the field of commercial and industrial flooring, and training the next generation of operatives to a high standard of excellence has been one way of achieving this end. We are proud to say that the successful apprenticeship scheme we now have is an investment in the future of both our company and the industry at large, contributing significantly to its sustainability and growth.

Over the past fifteen years, twenty apprentices have completed the FeRFA Apprenticeship Scheme, which has equipped these young people with crucial skills for the flooring industry as they have gained industry-recognised qualifications and the CSCS blue Skilled Worker card.

Our apprentices are engaged in the industry-recognised FeRFA the Resin Flooring Association programme, working towards completing their NVQ Level 2 In-Situ flooring course. Currently, our team includes four apprentices – Wayne Hamilton, Conan Flower, Lauren Watson, and Adam Chantry, who are all on track to complete their apprenticeships this year.  We are also excited to announce that Garin Hancock and Tom Hickey will join the apprenticeship programme in March 2024. Each apprentice has integrated seamlessly into our team, displaying a commendable eagerness to learn and contribute.

Maybe you, or a young person that you know is looking to acquire specialist skills or learn a trade that will set them up for the future. As mentioned earlier, opportunities in resin flooring work are growing every year so becoming a specialist in this sector via an apprenticeship is a route well worth considering.

Here are some of the reasons why pursuing an apprenticeship with us makes so much sense:

  • You gain hands-on experience in a real-world setting. As technology evolves and the industry undergoes rapid changes, there is often a growing gap between the skills employers need and the skills job seekers possess. An apprenticeship with FeRFA can help bridge this gap by providing targeted training that aligns with industry needs.
  • When you complete your apprenticeship you’ll have industry-recognised qualifications. You’ll also benefit from up-to-date training in high-demand skills which will prepare you for specific roles within the flooring industry. You’ll be qualified to work on a wide range of projects, including residential, commercial, industrial, and infrastructure developments and gain a variety of experience.
  • You get to earn while you’re learning the skills necessary for a career in flooring work and when you have finished your apprenticeship you’ll step into full-time employment within our company. We always look to hire from within our apprenticeship pool where possible and as a skilled worker in the construction industry, you’ll be able to command competitive wages.
  • Furthermore, as commercial and industrial flooring represents a part of the construction industry you’ll have job security. After all, you’ll be working in a stable industry that tends to withstand economic fluctuations because there is always a demand for construction projects!
  • During your apprenticeship, you have the opportunity to network and build relationships with experienced workers. These relationships can help you to gain invaluable insights into how to become successful in our trade. You’ll also learn how to work and collaborate in a team which will be very useful to you in the future. Construction projects typically involve collaboration among various tradespeople, engineers, architects, and project managers.
  • You’ll spend time focussing on developing practical skills that are immediately applicable to the workplace. If you are someone who prefers learning by doing rather than sitting down in an academic setting, a FeRFA apprenticeship will suit you down to the ground and provide you with an alternative pathway to traditional education and career development. It’s the perfect path for people who enjoy working with their hands and seeing tangible results and daily progress from their efforts. If that’s you, or a young person you know, you can look forward to a lot of satisfaction at work, seeing projects through from conception to completion.
  • Personalised training: You’ll receive guidance and support from experienced mentors who can help you navigate challenges and make the most of your training experience. Unlike traditional education programs, FeRFA apprenticeships are designed in collaboration with us as your employer to ensure that you’ll acquire the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in specific roles.
  • In the future, you’ll have opportunities to take on more challenging roles, pursue additional certifications, or even start your own business. Doing a FeRFA apprenticeship will help you to focus on lifelong learning and in today’s rapidly changing job market, lifelong learning is essential for staying relevant and competitive by staying up to date with industry trends and advancements such as evolving technologies, materials, and techniques.
  • There are physical and mental health benefits of taking up an apprenticeship in this industry. Not only does flooring work involve physical exercise, but overcoming challenges and seeing projects come to fruition can contribute to a sense of accomplishment and mental well-being. You might also have opportunities to use your creativity to overcome challenges and improve project outcomes.

The demand for skilled workers in the resin flooring industry is only going to increase with the current trend, providing job security and opportunities for career growth for our apprentices. While working in the construction industry can be demanding and challenging, many people find it to be a fulfilling and rewarding career choice.

Our FeRFA apprenticeship at TPS360 will offer you a pathway to career advancement and fulfilling work in a field that is essential to infrastructure, and allow you to contribute to development and the community.
